The Cayley Contest challenges Grade 10 students beyond the classroom and opens doors to enrichment programs, math camps, and global recognition.
The Cayley Contest is run by the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo. Open to Grade 10 students, it consists of 25 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 60 minutes. Calculator use is permitted.
Named after Arthur Cayley, a renowned British mathematician, the contest pushes students to think critically and solve advanced problems. Top results can lead to invitations to enrichment programs and math camps organized by Waterloo and the Canadian Mathematical Society.
May 2026 (Exact 2-week window TBD)
Registration Deadline: April 2026
Open to Grade 10 students. Exceptional Grade 9 students may also participate if recommended by teachers.
Students typically register through their school’s math department. If a school does not participate, parents/educators can connect with the CEMC or set up an official contest centre.
Strong results in the Cayley Contest improve student portfolios for university applications and scholarships, particularly for STEM programs.
In 2024, Grade 10 students from Oakville prepared with structured tutoring and placed in the top 25% worldwide in the Cayley Contest, earning Certificates of Distinction. Their success was recognized by the CEMC at Waterloo, showing how contest participation builds a competitive academic portfolio.
