What are the CIMC & CSMC?

The Canadian Intermediate Math Contest (CIMC) and the Canadian Senior Math Contest (CSMC) are organized by the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo.

CIMC: Open to students in Grades 9–11.
CSMC: Open to students in Grade 12 or below, especially advanced Grade 11–12 students.

Unlike the multiple-choice format of Pascal, Cayley, and Fermat, these contests require students to write full solutions with explanations, testing mathematical reasoning, proofs, and communication skills.

CIMC: Grades 9–11
CSMC: Grade 12 or below (advanced problem solvers)

How to Register

Schools register students via the CEMC Supervisor Portal. If your school does not participate, educators can request to host or connect you with a contest centre.

Steps for Students & Parents

September: Ask your math teacher if your school hosts CIMC/CSMC.
October: Confirm registration before the deadline.
November: Write the contest in your school or at a nearby centre.
Afterwards: Receive certificates and recognition; top scorers may be invited to national Olympiad pathways.
