The Fermat Contest challenges Grade 11 students with advanced problem-solving and prepares them for the Euclid Contest in Grade 12 and future STEM opportunities.
The Fermat Contest is run by the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo. Open to Grade 11 students, it consists of 25 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 60 minutes. Calculator use is permitted.
Named after Pierre de Fermat, a famous French mathematician, this contest builds higher-level problem-solving skills and prepares students for the Euclid Contest in Grade 12. Strong performance is recognized internationally. It’s a pre-requisite skill step leading to contests that unlock financial awards.
May 2026 (Exact 2-week window TBD)
Registration Deadline: April 2026
Open to Grade 11 students. Advanced Grade 10 students may also participate if recommended by teachers.
Students usually register through their school’s math department. If a school does not participate, parents/educators can connect with the CEMC or set up an official contest centre.
Achievements in the Fermat Contest strengthen student portfolios for university applications and scholarships, especially in STEM pathways.
Many Canadian students who excel in the Fermat Contest earn Certificates of Distinction and later qualify for the prestigious Euclid Contest in Grade 12. Their achievements are recognized by schools and universities, strengthening applications for programs in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering.
