One of Canada’s leading physics contests, hosted by the University of Waterloo, testing advanced physics skills and reasoning at the Grade 12 level.
The Sir Isaac Newton (SIN) Contest is run by the University of Waterloo’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. It is designed to challenge high school students (primarily Grade 12, though advanced Grade 11 students can attempt it).
The contest tests physics concepts through multiple-choice and written-response problems that emphasize logical reasoning, application of formulas, and conceptual clarity.
May 2026 (Exact date TBD)
Registration Deadline: April 2026
Open to Grade 12 physics students. Advanced Grade 11 students may also participate.
Registration is handled through schools or directly via Waterloo’s Physics Department for independent learners.
Top-performing Canadian students in the SIN Contest have gained recognition from the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto. While the contest does not directly determine admissions, it signals advanced aptitude and strengthens applications to competitive physics and engineering programs.
