Sir Isaac Newton (SIN) Physics Contest

One of Canada’s leading physics contests, hosted by the University of Waterloo, testing advanced physics skills and reasoning at the Grade 12 level.

What is the SIN Physics Contest?

The Sir Isaac Newton (SIN) Contest is run by the University of Waterloo’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. It is designed to challenge high school students (primarily Grade 12, though advanced Grade 11 students can attempt it).

The contest tests physics concepts through multiple-choice and written-response problems that emphasize logical reasoning, application of formulas, and conceptual clarity.

Who Can Write

Open to Grade 12 physics students. Advanced Grade 11 students may also participate.

How to Register

  2. March–April: Register before the deadline.
  3. May: Write the SIN Contest.
  4. Afterwards: Results and recognition distributed by Waterloo Physics.
