Why Mature Students May Lack These Requirements

Your Questions Answered

Who Can Take a Paramedic Pathway?

Paramedic programs are open to:

  • ➤ High school graduates missing required sciences or with grades below program cut-offs.
  • ➤ Mature students (19+) needing academic upgrading or admissions assessments.
  • ➤ Career changers seeking a fast-paced, health-focused role but lacking prerequisites.
Why Take Pre-Health Science Before Paramedic?

Pre-Health Science strengthens your academic foundation and increases competitiveness for Paramedic admission by:

  • ➤ Covering Biology, Chemistry, and Math if you’re missing them.
  • ➤ Improving grades if high school marks are too low.
  • ➤ Building confidence in problem-solving and applied sciences.
  • ➤ Offering preferred entry to Paramedic and other health programs at Ontario colleges.
Why Not Apply Directly to Paramedic?

Direct entry requires strong, recent marks in English, Math, and sciences. If you are missing Biology or Chemistry, or your average is below 70%, you may not qualify. Pre-Health Science or upgrading allows you to bridge the gap and prove readiness for the program.

1) How do I know if I’m missing requirements?

Check the Paramedic program’s admission page at your chosen college. If you lack Biology, Chemistry, or Math, or if your grades are below 65–70%, you are missing requirements. Mature students can confirm through admissions advisors or by writing an assessment test.

2) When should I prepare to enroll?

You can apply in Grade 12 if unsure about your marks, or right after graduation if you miss cut-offs. Mature students can apply anytime. Many apply to both Paramedic and Pre-Health programs through OCAS to keep both options open.

3) What grades should I aim for to qualify?

To be competitive for Paramedic programs, aim for:

  • 70%+ average across English, Math, and sciences.
  • ➤ Higher marks (75–80%) increase your chances at oversubscribed colleges.

The stronger your grades, the more likely you’ll secure a seat in a Paramedic program.
