Why Mature Students May Struggle with Requirements

Your Questions Answered

Who Can Take an ECE Pathway?

ECE is open to:

  • ➤ High school graduates missing English or Math prerequisites.
  • ➤ Mature students (19+) needing upgrading or admissions assessments.
  • ➤ Career changers interested in education, child care, and community support.
Why Take Academic Upgrading Before ECE?

While ECE admission is accessible, Academic Upgrading can be helpful if you:

  • ➤ Are missing English or Math credits.
  • ➤ Want to improve writing, communication, and critical thinking before starting.
  • ➤ Plan to later bridge into ECE degree programs or Teaching (B.Ed).
Why Not Apply Directly to ECE?

Direct entry is possible for many, but if you’re missing English, Math, or if your transcript is outdated/international, you may be asked to complete Academic Upgrading or an admissions test before admission.

1) How do I know if I’m missing requirements?

If you don’t have Grade 12 English or equivalent, you’ll need upgrading. Admissions staff can confirm through transcript review or an assessment test.

2) When should I prepare to enroll?

Apply during Grade 12 if unsure about marks, or as a mature student at any time. Many colleges have multiple intakes per year for ECE programs.

3) What grades should I aim for?

ECE programs are less competitive than Nursing or Dental Hygiene. Still, aim for:

  • 65%+ in English.
  • ➤ Strong communication and writing skills for success in coursework and placements.
